I've searched around on the Internet for this and found bits and pieces, but so far nothing has fixed the problem.
With a previous version of Windows Media Player, CDs would burn just fine.
Once WMP9 was installed, it returns with the error "device not detected" when trying to burn a CD.

I've checked the registry for what type of CD burner was installed, and it reports type 2 (re-writer..... it's an NEC NR-7900 CD/RW). However, the Properties dialog box for the CD/RW doesn't have the "Recording" tab up the top, and this leads me to think the drive ISN'T fully installed.

CDs can be burnt from other apps.

I'm really stuck on ideas now. Anyone have this problem or know of it, and perhaps a fix?

Are you sure you could Burn CD's with previous versions of media player? I though microsoft only brought CD burning in with WMP9, could be wrong.

Can you burn disks using XP's inbuilt burning software? This is what WMP9 uses as the basis for it's burning.

If you are unsure as to how to do this check out your Windows Help File, basically you just drag the files you want to burn onto the CD drive via Explorer or my computer.

have noticed that if you have two cd-rom/burners on your pc and the burner is located as a slave (or second on the cable) the XP burner will not recognize it (or so I read somewhere). Might look at that as a possible remedy.
