yea wmp is a real unstable player dosent like certin files dosent play the stuff it should and sometimes it takes for every to load a cd yea I would try to reinstall it and see if that helps and I usally use the windows cd player I like it alot better and its not as picky but u cant play video if u like wmp that much I would just try to reinstall it
Yea there is bunches of free mp3 to wav format u can even do a google search and see if u can research 1 b/c we had a couple at school and 1 or 2 of them we had to get rid of b/c we were getting alot of system bogg down when we were using them and we got alot of virus hitting our fire wall from this 1 mp3 site and it gave 3 seperate Trojans as soon as u opened the page check here for some free mp3 to wav programs

You suggested that he/she uses mp3 to wav, sure that would be good if he/she wanted to burn .mp3's. And one other thing. MP3 --> WAV costs money, it's not free.
