I also posted this in Hardware where it really doesnt belong
so here it is again

Networking problem
-2 brand new Toshiba laptops
-Windows XP for both machines
-Linxys wireless router
1 laptop will see the network, 1 wont
The laptop that wont work
-has had the router software uninstalled/reinstalled
-network card has been reseated
drivers for card have been uninstalled/reinstalled
-router has been replaced
-laptop has been replaced
-the laptop (the one not working)CAN CONNECT IF ITS HARDWIRED, but wireless it cant connect to the network.

Can it possibly be a service that isnt enabled?
Please help

If the wireless card is removable have you tried swaping it with the other one?

Actually I have. Sorry I should have included that info in my first summary. Unfortunately it didnt resolve the issue.
I know it has to be something simple

Is the router providing DHCP and is DHCP enabled on both machines? Can you ping the router from both machines?

Also check latest BIOS... that might make a difference... JTB

Can you please elaborate. You mean upgrade the BIOS? How would that explain the success of one laptop and the failure of the other.

DHCP is enabled.
Can ping from the one that can see the network, but the other one wont.

Have you done a ipconfig /all to see if in fact the computer in question is getting a IP address from the router or if the IP is a APIPA address

Latest update
No IP address is being obtained
IP address isnt an APIPA address

Help?

On the bad machine try ipconfig /renew in a command prompt. Post the the error message. Please confirm that you do have TCP/IP properties set to obtain an address automatically in your network connections. Is there only 1 connection showing in your network connections window?

If all the above checks out ok, try releasing the IP address on the one that does work - ipconfig /release. Then shut it down and see if you can pick up the address on the one that's not working. If this happens, then the router is only giving out 1 ip address for whatever reason.

Thanks smah, I will try your suggestions. Much appreciated.

My last and only toshiba laptop XP wireless experience left me totally frustrated. So I reformatted the HD to install 98 only to find that there were no drivers so I took it to 2K where there were drivers. Worked like a champ.
Spent a week with 2 Dells and SpeedStream wireless cards with no joy, shoved in a SMC card, connected right up, XP found an update to install, and promptly upchucked. 2K again. Ed Fair
