Hi all-

I have a custom-built box (AMD Athlon XP2800+, MSI KM4M board) running XP Pro. I am trying to install a Linksys WMP54G PCI Wireless adapter and having a horrible time. If I use XP's built-in wireless confguration, my connection intermittently drops and must be manually restored. I have seen this symptom many times before. To get around it, I usually disable the XP wireless zero configuration utility and, instead, I install the manufacturer's configuration utility.

However, sometimes the installation of the Linksys utility will not run. The setup program starts and then just disappears. Even when it runs normally, it never adds a Program Group or places the configuration utility in the system tray. In fact, I can't even locate an executable for the Linksys utility in the folder it creates on the hard drive. So, needless to say, I can never actually get to the point where I can configure the connection to the network.

I am pulling my hair out on this one!! Has anyone seen these symptoms before? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Chris

What kind of router? I had a similar problem trying to mix a netgear adapter and a d-link router. I finally got a d-link adapter and all was good.

The router in question is also a Linksys. However, I haven't even gotten as far as communication between the wireless card and the router. I can't even get XP to install the card's configuration utility.

Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Use the XP built-in wireless feature then. When you say it intermittently drops connection, does it just say Wireless Network Unavailable?

I have a Linksys wireless router (802.11b) also and it says it intermittently drops but I can still function on the network and Internet. This is a known issue with the Linksys router. I'm using a built-in wireless card on my Compaq laptop.

Unfortunately, when it drops the connection the LAN and/or Internet connection IS lost. This is about the fifth time I have encountered this issue. In the past I have been able to get the manufacturer's utility to run and then the problem is resolved. This time, I simply can't get it to work.

Disable in the client driver:
. the use of 802.1x authentication
. the Bluetooth support

Also trying using a different channel to broadcast the wireless signal. 6 and 11 seem to work best. This you need to do in the config of your wireless box.
