Greetings,

Well I finally broke down and installed XP Sp2. I connect to the internet through a SMC wireless router and then a cable modem. After XP SP2 finished and rebooted, the little computer icon says that I am connected with very good signal strength, however, when I open IE, it indicates I am off line. In addition, the SMC Utility that used to start every time I open windows doesn't.

Can you give me some help on where to look?

It is disparaging that Microsoft makes things so hard to do...

Thanks for your help!

Thanks b!

This is what I was looking for. However some of the tabs etc. have changed with SP2. I decided to use Windows to control the wireless card transmissions. I have spent the better part of 4 hours without sucess.

I first went to the SMC router and enabled WAP security and entered a text key.

I then went to the laptop clicked the wireless network icon.

It opened the Wireless network Connection Properties window.

Clicked on Wireless Networks tab.

Use windows to configure my wireless... was checked and SMC (Automatic) was in the Preferred Network window.

Clicked on Properties to open a SMC Properties window.

Selected WPA-PSK from the Network Authentication dropdown.

Entered and reentered the same password I have entered on the router.

Clicked OK twice to get everything closed.

Still have the little yellow warning sign and the message that I have Limited or no Connectivity. Have great signal strength and speed but can't run in the race.

Any help would be appreciated.

TIA!!

Start, Run, CMD
ipconfig /all

Paste the results back here. (Highlight the text, move the mouse cursor to the little icon at top left in the box, left click, Edit, Copy. Then paste back here.)

OK B, here it is:

Start button, Run, CMD

netsh int ip reset reset.txt

netsh winsock reset

Wait for the instruction to restart your computer. Restart your computer.

B,

I ran the two commands and waited for 30 minutes but did not get a message to restart. Am still waiting...

What is next?

Thanks again for your help!!

Restart.

Do only the second command, and report your results back here.

Ok B,

Did the restart and the second command. When I put my cursor over the network icon it says I am connected with excellent signal strength, however IE gives me a message that The Page cannot be displayed.

More help please.

Thanks again!!

It is sounding better.

First, for testing, disable all security on the router and the wireless adapter. No WEP, No WPA, No WPA2, no restrictions by MAC address. Just an SSID. Change your channel from 6 to 1 on both router and adapter. Note the IP address for the router. I believe the default is 192.168.1.1)

Second, Apply static IP settings:
Does an IPCONFIG /All as you did above still show this section of entries?

Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 169.254.214.140
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

If so, lets try a static IP and settings and see how far we get.

IP: 192.168.1.101 <<=== or same subnet 192.168.x of router
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1 <<==== the IP of your router

Save.

Reboot and test.

Wireless access problem since SP2

B,

Got frustrated last night and went to bed. Got up this morning and cleared all encryption from the router and laptop rebooted both and connection was perfect. Added WAP encription back to router and laptop. No connection, however, had a little yellow dot going ack and forth under the wireless icon. Left for church and came back, got bust so 5 hours had passed. Got message that I was connected to the network via wireless. Shutdown laptop and have restarted and everything seems fine. It did take a long time to start IE.

Don't know what I did different this time from last but now it works.

Thanks so much for your help. I would suppose that it was a number of things which you helped me correct.

My regards to you!!!

You are very welcome. One thing that as an explanation may help you in your puzzle is that the router may stop responding if the client fails authentication a certain number of times:

I had a similar frustration - laptop worked fine on a Friday night, closed it and went to bed, and the next morning limited connectivity. Rebooted, could connect to my neighbor's unsecured router but not mine. After a few hours of reinstalling drivers, I discovered it was the encryption on my laptop. It somehow got changed to Open from WEP which did not match my router. Still do not know how it changed overnight.
