I am proably missing something obvious, but AI am stumped. I have wireless internet access through Comcast. I had 2 computers on the network. I added a third computer last night. The computer shows that it is connected to the network and I can access the other 2 computers, but I cannot connect to the internet. It just times out. The original computers are running winxp pro and the new one is xp home. What setting am I missing? All settings on the three seem to be the same.

Do an IP config at the command prompt and see the following information.

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : hsd1.mi.comcast.net.
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Brand X 10/100
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-E0-29-69-BB-00
Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.15.101
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.15.1
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.15.1
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 68.87.77.130
68.87.72.130

Make sure you have a setting for everything as above (not the same number, but a valid entry). IP address should NOT be 169.xxx. Try to ping what is listed as the default gateway. If that works, try to ping one of the DNS servers. If that works, try to ping or If that works, it may be a browser problem or spyware problem. Check Internet Explorer settings in the CONNECTION tab. Try loading Firefox.

can pin g everything but the dns server and google. all the other settings are there.

One other note. This computer connected to an unsecure wiereless network in rthe past. It is just when I added the wep key did it not connct to internet, but does see othe computer on wireless network

Start->Settings->Network Connections->right-click your NIC, Properties...

Make this setting match the other two PCs...probably everything checked under General, right-click Internet Protocol->Properties, make sure the settings match (probably all automatic) look under Authentication for the same settings.

Finally, under Advanced, disable the Firewall (temporarily) to make sure that's not the problem. Best of luck.
