Hiya,

I have an issue regarding slow browser responses on WinXP Pro machines. Browsers include MSIE 6.1 and Netscape 7.1.

With WinXP the response is very very abysmally slow at times (60+ seconds to load a webpage, or hangs and never loads, including on sites such as this one) and at others it seems just a little slow (10-15 seconds to load a non-graphic-heavy webpage). These are webpages and web applications both on an intranet and on the internet, both with my work computers and my home computers.

I've tried on different machines and get the same responses from Pentium 4 CPU w/ 1.80 GHz, 1.19 GHz, 504 MB RAM PCs as I do from Pentium II, 349 MHz, 320 MB RAM PCs. The same web applications and webpages respond fine with the WinNT and Win2000 PCs I've tried.

The XP firewall is not enabled on any of these machines, and as far as I can tell the browser security settings are comparable.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Becca

Sounds like a good description of using the wrong MTU settings, and perhaps too small an RWIN value.

It is easy enough to diagnose.

http:\\
Use the "Tweak Test", and follow the recommendations for setting RWIN and MTU with the free DrTCP tool available on the site.

Thanks, I'll try this with my home PCs ... not sure I'd be allowed to teak things on the work PCs. But if it helps, I'll pester the help desk and bribe them to do it. :)

Run the test from work, you are not forced to make any changes.

And as I said above the settings are only for MTU and RWIN, nothing bizarre. Most of the advertised tweaking tools for internet connections are worthless, but matching MTU is just common sense and best practices.

I would have run the test from work just to see the values, but alas clicking on the Start button for Tweak Tester II shows that the site is currently not available. (The test server was unreachable or offline The error: ny-monitor.dslreports.com)

When I have seen this stuff before, it has been related to IP network settings, especially which DNS servers are specified and the order in which they are specified. At work, it seems like these things change frequently and without notice, so you might check with a network guy to find out the right ones and the right order.

Thanks all ... alas I still can't access the tweaks despite repeated tries over the last few days. Anyhoot, I've opened up a help desk ticket and will see what they say and if there's anything they can do about it. At least if it turns out to be network firewall or network security issue, it's out of my hands in terms of direct responsibility for why it's so slow! :0}`

first couple of questions?
1. when was last time u defraged.
2. following is allowed from your system. No help desk needed.
2a. Using Disk CleanupDisk Cleanup helps free up space on your hard drive. Disk Cleanup searches your drive, and then shows you temporary files, Internet cache files, and unnecessary program files that you can safely delete. You can direct Disk Cleanup to delete some or all of those files.
Open Disk Cleanup.
Notes
To open Disk Cleanup, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup.
You might be suprised it really works and helps...
3. if your using XP u can set the TCP/ip op[tions and it allowed also with no help needed or permission form HELP Desk.
3a. start>>control panel>>> Network connections>>> open click support>> then click repair... that auto sets your TCP/IP to the networks and some times it does need a minor repair...
