I have a WinXP Pro machine running SP1 connecting to a domain, the server is Windows 2000. Now and again the machine will put a red cross on the mapped drives and when you click on them it will say unable to connect. Also when trying to browse the workgroup it says cannot find it!!

It does not lose connection to the network as shortcuts using the full network path (\\server\....) still work to the server and i can still ping it. Rebooting the machine solves the problem.

Is this a dns problem? I have double checked the settings and all is correct!

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Sounds like it could be... Try mapping a drive using the IP instead of the name and see if it persists. NET USE Z: //<SERVERIP>/Share /persistent:yes
Try that and see if you keep being unable to connect...

Thanks, I will try this.

Do you know why you can not browse the network/workgroup when this happens. Sometimes i cannot browse the workgroup on Win 2000 pc's also, but i do not get the mapped drives problems on these machines.

Thanks
