Hi all,
I (in my earlier ignorance) went thru the Network setup wizard thinking I had to do that just to share files via a hub. I thought they had to be part of the same workgroup. I have since been told that is not true (though I have not tested it). The bottom line is, I no longer want this XP box to be part of a workgroup, but can find no info on how to remove that 'feature'. I have a cable modem for my ISP and so need the NIC and TCP/IP, etc.
The strange thing is that on my laptop (Win2K professional), i had no problem seeing the workgroup, the laptop, shared drive etc, but when I tried to open the workgroup under WinXP, it said I may not have privileges (I AM the only admin on this box). Per Microsoft, this can only happen if the computer browser service is not started, which it is.
Anway, I digress. Does anybody know what is invlved in removing yourself from the workgroup and/or 'undoing' the network setup wizards deeds?
I will be setting up Oracle 9i on my Linux box, and connecting to the DB from my WinXP box, but as long as use a listener I should be able to connect via ODBC.
Thanks!
Gary

Hi,
No, actually, I am wanting to no longer be part of any workgroup at this time. I have searched thru all of Microsoft's info that I can find on it, and there is no place where it tells you how to tell your desktop it is no longer part of any type of network and remove the workgroup all together.
Thanks,
Gary

Disable your network in control panel, network connections, local area connection -right click -disable

Windows only allows you to have either to be part of a workgroup or a domain. If you don't want to be part of a workgroup, you have to remove the MS networking components or de-activate them. I am not sure if XP will let you. Also, I am not sure if disabling your network disables the entire interface or just the networking components.

If you disable the network then obviously you will no longer have ANY network connection. Try changing the name of the workgoup, reboot, change it back, reboot.
