I just added a second WINS server to the network, which is an NT4 domain. The goal is to take the old WINS server offline. I had the new one running for about a week, with replication to the old WINS server. When I took the old one offline, users had trouble seeing different resources, mainly on different subnets. I had to put the old one back online again. I need to remove it completely, and figured that a week was enough to make sure the databases were consistent. Any ideas on why this happened?

Um...did you point all of your client machines to the NEW WINS server? If not, you must point the client machines to the new wins server. To do this, edit each client machine TCP/IP settings so that an entry for the new WINS server exist. Alternatively, if you are using DHCP, you can make this change once on the DHCP server. However, you have to becareful and make sure all the users receive the change before you take the original WINS server offline.

The changes were made in all of the DHCP servers, and users that were static. The problem seemed to lie in the fact that the users could not find their DHCP server, because they could not even pull an address until I put the old WINS server back online in conjunction with the new one.

Was the old WINS server acting as a DHCP relay agent, by any chance?

Have you configured all of your NT servers to look at the new WINS server instead of the old WINS server (the network config)? -----------------------------------------------------
