We have an old NT 4.0 server here at one of the sites at my company, WINS has been freezing up and hanging the Server for some time. I added some more ram to the server giving it a max of 256MB, all the server does is manage printing, run DHCP, and WINS. What are some things to look at for troubleshooting this kind of problem.

We had exactly the same problem the other week. Take a full backup of the server and re-apply the service pack on the server.

My advice is to do it after working hours just in case something goes wrong. We are talking about a Microsoft product here after all!

If that doesn't work, you may have a corruption of the WINS database. Also, how many users do you have on the network in question?

Thanks for your response, we have 10 users on the network here, other users at another office location complained about slow network throughput yesterday, we could have a network wide WINS Corruption. I'll reload the Service Pack tonight and see what happens. What are somethings I can check to verify WINS database corruption?

It appears that you have a comparatively small network so a corruption is somewhat unlikely. Use jetpack.exe to check the database. Windows Help should tell you how to use it.

Have you checked the event log to see what is happening? If you see lots of errors, take down the event ID numbers and go to to see what they mean. The site will also tell you how to fix the problem.

The event log is the best feature of NT for fault tracing. is the best place for fixing the problems!

Regards,

Its possible you have corruption in the WINS database also. How often do you jetpack the wins db?

I just started noticing this problem, but I haven't jetpacked the WINS database at all and I don't believe anyone else has in a good while. I'll give that a shot.
