Hi there,

I have just installed a WINS server on a machine on our domain. The machine is called RSERVER and the ip address is 3.1.6.150. When I go to the WINS administration, it shows my server but next to it has an IP address of 169.254.99.24 I have no idea what this IP address is for!

When I look in the WINS administration on other servers in our domain it lists the RSERVER as 3.1.6.150. Is this a problem?

Many thanks,
John

The 169.254 IP address is automatically assigned when configured to use DHCP to obtain an IP address, and it cannot contact a DHCP server.

Go to a dos box, type in ipconfig /all and see what your nic is doing. Something is going wrong with your communication. Serbtastic is correct as to the 169.254 ip, but we need to find the reason you can't connect. It has nothing to do with WINS. Check all your error messages for problems.

Yeah, I was stuck in Disney's Tower of Terror once.

I only have one NIC in the server though and it has a static IP set of 3.1.6.150.

The server has been working for a day now and all clients can connect to it via DHCP and the DNS server works just fine. Just not sure why it is labelled with that particular IP address.
