So what's the verdict? Does a WINS server create more traffic or less? If you have a new Win 2003 server, of course it's going to already have DNS. Would you install WINS, or not unless you have 9x & NT4 clients? I was told that certain apps even on a 2000 system may first look to WINS, not DNS.

If you only have one or two pre w2k clients, don't use wins. Use lmhosts on the clients. If you have a lot of pre w2k clients, use wins so you're not updating the lmhosts files all the time. That help?

Actually, I just read an article that said if you're doing NETbios over TCP/IP its a good idea to use it. The article also said that if you're using anything that's older --> Exchange 5.5 etc, you should use WINS.

I'd say that in a pure 2003 environment, with XP/2000 clients you wouldn't need it.
