On a 2000 server, I am getting the following error message:

"WINS could not start due to a missing or corrupt database.
Restore the database using WINS Manager (or winscl.exe found in the Windows 2000 Resource Kit) and restart WINS. If WINS still does not start, begin with a fresh copy of the database.

To do this:

1) Delete all the files in the %SystemRoot%\system32\WINS directory.
NOTE: If the WINS database file (typically named wins.mdb is not in the above directory, check the registry for the full filepath.
Delete the .mdb file.
NOTE: If jet*.log are not in the above directory, check the registry for the directory path. Delete all log files

2) Restart WINS.

and have you done this?

1)I couldn't figure out how to restore the database using WINS Manager.2) I don't have the Windows Resource kit installed. 3)I DID delete the files in the WINS directory, but I still can't restart the WINS service in services.

Have you tried using jetpack to repair the database?

Another way to approach this is to remove the WINS service completely, make sure all the files in %SystemRoot%\system32\WINS are gone, then reboot and re-install WINS.

Redwhip-Where do I get jetpack, and how do I use it?

Gersen-How do I reinstall WINS?

In Windows 2000 Server, to uninstall WINS:

Start --> Settings --> Control Panel

Add/Remove Programs, click the "Add/Remove Windows Components" button.

Highlight "Networking Services", then click the Details button.

Scroll down to "Windows Internet Name Service (WINS)" and uncheck the box next to it.

Click OK, then Next, and follow prompts to complete the procedure.

Make sure at this point you delete the files in ...\System32\WINS

I'm not sure if it will request a reboot, but if so then reboot.

Then follow the same procedure to re-intall WINS, checking the box in Networking Services.

Luck!

Gersen,

I did the steps above, and as I was reinstalling, I got the same original error message. And I still can't get the WINS service to run. Any other ideas?

These are the Microsoft Knwledge Base articles returned by searching on your error:

I hope these can help. If you come up with more data, post it here or you can search at:
