Hi All
I need an easy way to close down NT workstation and release its IP leases on a laptop PC which moves between 2 domains. I am able to create a batch file containing ipconfig /release and shutdown.exe which works for anyone who is an administrator, domain admin etc. However if the user logged on is just a domain user then they get an error when they try to use ipconfig /release.
How can I have a simple way to allow users to release their IP leased addresses?

Sounds like you need to give some local admin rights on the NT workstation. If they are a simple Domain User, then they probably don't have rights to modify network settings, or a policy is in place. -= Beer is food! Is it suppertime? =-

Yes Daveyboy2, I can do this by giving local admin rights to the users concerned but we hoped we could go down a different route. One solution we have tried is to shorten our DHCP leases to 1 day. This way the laptop always asks for an address at the start of a working day. Thanks for your input - it is appreciated

Hiya ..
Firstly
ensure that the user has local admin rights ...

secondly
open notepade & enter the following
_________________________________________________
ipconfig/release
ipconfig/renew
****
exit
______________________________________

NB ****** is the location of your logon script ... & is
optional

NOW save the file as
c:\winnt\profiles\all users\desktop\release.bat

When the user double clicks on the icon it will release the ip address, and obtain another; however, you need to save the batchfile to the %all users\desktop\ in order to ensure that it will function correctly ... I initially wrote the file to overcome the problem of reverse IP mapping, with a couple of users transfering between several sites, which sit in seperate IP ranges ... the file has now been in operation for a little over 3 years & is now part of the standard build working with over 2,000 laptop users.

Any problems ... pounder_arthur@hotmail.com
