Winows 98 screen goes blank

Can anyone help ?
Using windows 98 it boots up fine to the main large logo page but from there instead of the desktop appearing containing all the icons i get only a blank screen. The mouse is present but niether left or right clicking achieve anything. Any Ideas?

It could be several things including viruses and spyware.

first of all, are you able to boot up into safe mode?

If you can then various suggestions can be made.

Please report back.

Thanks for replying

I can not start the computer in safe mode either as the same thing happens.
When the screen goes blank a small window pops up very briefly in the bottom left of the screen titled internet explorer.

I have tryed reinstalling windows over the top but that had no effect

If it was working OK in a the last few days, you could try running from the DOS prompt Scandisk /restore

This will put the computer back to where it was on that day.

but unfortunatly my scandisk does not have a restore function !

Have you tried the step by step confirmation option on boot-up?

I have the same problem! However, I can right click on the blank screen, which opens a window where I can click on a program, but the program does run. I'm at the end of my user knowledge as to what to do. Is it time to go to the local computer repair shop?

Go through the step by step confirmation. Click yes to everything and if it won't process one of the drivers then you know which one is causing the problem.

Once again rob thanks for your time but no joy it all processes and ends up at the same screen !

other information that might help:

when booted up and screen is blank pressing control alt and delete gives me a window entitled Rnaapp and the three options shut down, end task and cancel

When i try and insatall windows it says it can not find mdmslamr.cat on the windows 98 disk

any more thoughts gratefully appreciated

Me thinks that you will have to bite the bullet and do a reformat and fresh install of Windows 98 unless anybody else can help.
