WinNT4.0 DHCP

Hi,

I have this WinNT 4.0 Server without DHCP server services and mmc console, how ever something this server started to host IP address to my network.

Where and how do i disable / check if the DHCp service is running?

What are the ip addresses? If they are in the 169.254.x.x range, then it's not dhcp. That's automatic addressing. If a client can't get an IP, it assigns itself one using that format. I don't have an NT server in front of me, but it should be in Administrative Tools, common, DHCP Manager. Good luck.

thank you sir,

The address is not automatic address, it is the address within my subnet.

I found this out when i notice a DHCP address of my workstation is not within my scope. upon the command "ipconfig /all" i notice the dhcp server is showing my NT4.0 instead of my supposed Win2k server.

I have checked the services and program file but fails to locate any dhcp program.

Try an ipconfig /release renew on a machine showing the nt box dhcp and see what happens. Just curious. Good luck.

The address show random toggle between my Win2K dhcp server and tat of the NT4.0 server(Not suppose to be DHCP).

IS there a router hooked up here, are you using ICS, how is your network communicating, static IP's?

Hi,

basicly my network in a nutshell is a single subnet with servers having static IP and workstation having DHCP.

My problem here is that there is 1 WinNT4.0 Server winthin my Active Directory network. After checking, i wasnt able to find any dhcp services running on this server however it is hosting IP to some of my workstation by random.

Sometime, a simple release and renew will revert the user to the correct DHCP server however most of us know that normal user is not that smart.

i want to turn off the service however i wasnt able to find the mmc for dhcp.

NT doesn't have mmc. You want to turn off dhcp if it's running in services, however, why is the nt box still running? Convert it over to a W2K server and make it a secondary master controller.

The NT box is to support a legacy software which runs the company operations, the software is not support in Win2K env. given a choice i would burn down that box long time ago. of cos the company would give us the common cost factor in upgrading.

Been there, done that. Had NT 4.0 on w2k enviorement because some of the old software wouldn't work with tcp/ip. Needed fancy batch files to make it work. Look in winnt/system32/dhcp and see what the log files say. Also, look for any error messages. Good luck.

Should be Easy,

DHCPAdmin.exe I think is the admin program if DHCP Server is running (If not try DHCPADM.EXE) You should be able to kill the server from there.

If not then ControlPanel -> Services and find the DHCP Server Service and kill it, Ie set it to disabled.
