I found during my upgrade from WindowsMe to WindowsXP that I needed a new printer driver from HP. The driver ps306en1.exe is a self extracting / installing module.
During the install there is a test to see if the driver can communicate with the printer. In my case it could not. The options were to 1) try again or 2) cancel which also caused the driver software to be removed from the system.
The answer I found was: at the point where the connection failed, to shutdown the PC, abandoning the install. When the PC restarted, the printer and it's driver were reconized and the install was complete.
