Windows XP Theme changing itself

So i actually like the blue taskbar with the green start button, etc. Every once in a while, I boot up to a gray, very much win95 looking desktop. Last couple times this happened, I just put things back the way i like and saved the theme. Now, I don't have the "windows xp" option under the Appearance tab - it only allows the "windows classic" selection. I'm going to start my spyware/malware/virus scans now, but does anybody already know what I'm dealing with?
