Windows XP startup and shutdown sounds

I cannot get my windows xp startup and shutdown sounds to work. Changing sound files, or schemes doesn't work either. When I test the sounds, they play OK, but no sounds play for windows start or shut down events. All other event sounds play OK. Any suggestions?

I all of a sudden have the exact same problem. I am going to try this solution tonight and see if that works.

I don;t have that registry entry they are talking about. What else could it be? Thanks.

Have you tried using System Restore to go back before the problem?
