Hi, I have Windows XP and it works great... except for when it first boots up. When I boot up and I'm at my desktop, I can pretty much open up most programs that I've installed and they work fine. BUT... if I try to open my network connection for my DSL connection or right click and go to properties of any icons, it takes 1-2 minutes just to load. My question is what could this lag be, considering I have a new 80 gb western digital hd, Windows XP, and i defragment on a regular basis?? It seems to only happen with functions related to Windows, and only upon boot up... is that just a part of XP? I'd appreciate any tips or hints on this. Thanks!!!

p.s. you guys are awesome... straight to the point and immediate solutions. I've read through the posts and I think I've struck gold with these forums :D

p.p.s. I have an Athlon 1.33 Ghz, an 60 GB HDD, Windows XP, 512 mb of ddr ram, and a 32 mb ati video card. My computer isn't slow at ANY other times and I have updated my norton anti-virus software, and my system has come out clean from any virii.

Some freeware or free trial programs you can play with to see if they help.

What virus scanner are you running? Some scanners can cause this behavior. As a test, disable it's automatic startup (how to do this depends on what the software is) and restart the pc. I don't recommend running like this for very long, but it will prove or disprove that theory. Where you go from there is up to you.

have a pc with WIN XP PRO...new pc...crashed. Offers to boot into safe mode then goes to scan disk then reverts back to 'safe mode' selection list. Would like to try restore but if it won't boot?????
Figure there is a DOS method to do it...just can't think of it off hand..help will be appreciated QUICK :)

dirkfour4,

Is it loading correctly and fully into Safe Mode? Have you tried loading the "Last known good configuration" option?
Have you tried the System Restore option while in Safe Mode.

Are you getting any error messages?
