I had problems initially installing the SP2 update, but somehow meandered my way around to fixing it - not sure what I did, but it did download and install. Now there are new updates, and I can't download those! I have 104 of 112 GB of remaining space - I initially had an error message that I did not have enough disc space, but I ran a defragment and clean disc, and that error message has now disappeared.

Here's the error message that I now get when I try to run and install:

Critical Update for Office XP on Windows XP Service Pack 2 (KB885884)
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP Service Pack 2 (KB834707)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB885835)
Critical Update for Windows XP (KB886185)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB885836)
Malicious Software Removal Tool - January 2005 (KB890830)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB890175)

Any suggestions out there?

Thanks for the suggestion, but it didn't work. I ran the link, restarted, and attempted to re-run updates and I still got the failure message. Any other suggestions?

Here's the error message I received when I ran the install after running the link:

Critical Update for Office XP on Windows XP Service Pack 2 (KB885884)
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP Service Pack 2 (KB834707)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB885835)

I'm sorry, you listed the effected updates but not the error message.

Tried all of the various steps listed on the Microsoft page you suggested, and I still get the same error messages in the following order:
"Updates were unable to be successfully installed"
"The follwoing updates failed to be installed successfully" and then the list of items that I previously pasted are displayed

When I click on the install history, and then on the portion of the chart that says "failed", I get "Error Code 80246008" - this is the same error code I got when I tried to install SP2.

Good catch.

You are denying in your IE settings the installation of the newer V5 ActiveX controls needed by Windows update.

If you get a message that "Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page" (error code 0x80246008), first make sure that you have allowed the ActiveX control used by Windows Update to be installed.
If that fails, try adding these six entries to the "trusted zones" list in Internet Explorer's security tab:

Couple of questions: first, how do I ensure that the ActiveX control used by Windows Update has been installed? I'm a complete novice, and instructions on this would be great.

Second, I added the https items you listed previously, but it won't take any http items - I get an error code that it needs to be an https. Any suggestions?

And thanks again for seeing me through this!

Hurray! Never mind my questions - I figured it out. For every other novice out there, this is what was wrong on my computer:

First, I was not able to add http sites to my list of trusted sites because I the box entitled "require server verification" was checked. Simply uncheck it and you can then add http sites (instead of adding only https sites)

Second, right click My Computer, then choose "manage". Go down to "services and applications", click the + sign so the drop down list is exposed. Click on "services". Then from the list, double click on "background intelligent service" and make sure that the startup type is "automatic" and that service status is "started". For some reason, I need to do this every time I reboot - so make sure that you check this every time you need to update.

Many thanks to bcastern for all your help!

Sorry it has taken me so long to post a response, Linney. If Windows is supposed to start itself, why doesn't it? I still need to go back and manually change it from Manual to Automatic.

Look in the Event logs.
Start, Run, Eventvwr.msc

I agree with linney that the Background Intelligent Transfer service can work fine with its default setting to Manual.

There is some other issue involved, and hopefully the Event logs will show what it is.

In addition, look to the log files from your Windows Update sessions (in C:\Windows). They may show a specific error for the failure to start BITS.
