Windows XP slow to start up, 1

I have just built a new PC - AMD 1700+ xp, 512 of Ram, so its pretty fast!!

However, when XP proffesional loads up, the desktop loads and I cant do anything for about 40 seconds. When I try to click on the start menu or anywhere in the task bar, the mouse cursor changes to an hourglass. Opening programs take ages too, until everything seems to have loaded and the system is ready. There is no disk activity during this time. I have a hercules graphics card, soundblaster sound card, logitec cordless optical keyboard and mouse and network card. Could it be xp be trying to load drivers for these or something? There is nothing in my start up folder. Only a few things in my system tray after statup.

Ive looked on Microsoft but to no avail! Pleas help.

Hello there...If you have a network card try this: Go to network properties for the card, then highlight TCP/IP click on properties and choose to use the folloing IP address, on the IP address type 10 255 255 10 for subnet type 255 255 255 0 this should solve the hang up....XP is just trying to find the PC's place within a network, this will give it a phony address for XP to see ......I did it on my PC and it worked great...no more hang up.

What type of motherboard are you using? Make sure the drivers are up to date. I had this problem on a MSI's new mobo K7620 (or something like that) and all it took was the new updated mobo drivers. Now its faster than you ever need

I have a an Epox 8kha+ board. As soon as I built it I went and downloaded the new drivers for it. I might have a look on thier site though to see if they have any info on this. Good suggestion. Still haven't tried the ip address thing though. stuck at work on a friday!! Pah!!

I had the same problem as u. I think it was something to do with NVIDIA drivers that installed a service called "NVIDIA Driver Helper Service". (i was told that this caused problems but i disabled many other services as well) if you dont have "NVIDIA Driver Helper Service" then it could be any of these.

I do not need any of these services running but thats just me, stopping them may stop some of your programs working. (this should also make your comp more secure)
