Installed Windows XP Pro without any problems, modem working fine. Dialed out multi times to different ISP's without error. Downloaded SP1 from Microsoft and re-booted after which modem could not dial out. Said I had a hardware error. Changed cable, swapped modems, even added a USB modem, all to no avail. All modems and drivers installed ok. Checked all modems on another machine and had no problems. Removed SP1 through Add/Remove function. No success. Re-formatted, re-installed and applied XP fixes manually (NOT SP1) and have not had any problems. Has anyone else had similar trouble ? Why does XP's recognition of hardware differ from machine to machine ?

SP1 - Otherwise known as Microsoft's Revenge.

Yes, I must have deleted and re-installed the original modem at least three times before installing the two other modems (one USB and one serial). I also deleted both of the new modems and re-installed drivers for them as well.

Try disableing the MS firewall I know when I installed SP I had problems untill I disabled it
