Hello...

Lately my computer has been restarting by itself. It happens out of nowhere. I am browsing the web, chatting, playing music, etc. Sometimes it happens when i click on an icon or a link, the screen goes blank and the computer starts to restart, and other times it just restarts without me clicking on anything. I then get a blue screen saying drive C: has to be checked for consistency when it boots back up. Does anyone know of a solution to this problem ?

Look in your event viewer for clues ->Start, Run, eventvwr.msc

XP is set to reboot by default. This behavior can be changed ->Right click on My Computer, Properties, Advanced tab, Startup & Recovery Settings button, uncheck Automatically Restart.

Post back with the actual Stop error.

Whatever the fault is, as a consequence it is automatically running Chkdsk to check your drive for errors. That is probably the message about to your "C" drive.

To locate the error that is causing this to happen look in your Event viewer.

Look in the System or Application folder. You can get to the Event Viewer via right click My Computer icon and select Manage.

Any errors logged in the Event Viewer can be expanded by double clicking on the error line.

Also check any "Information" line that mentions "savedump" and you should find reference to "recovered from a bug check". This is the Stop Error that caused your problem.

If your problem persists post back with this Stop Error.

You can also turn off "automatically restart after an error" so it will just halt at the fault and display the full Stop Error and blue screen.

Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties .
On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery .
Click to clear the Automatically restart check box under System failure , and then click OK . The error message on a blue screen should remain on the screen so you can record the error information.

I looked in the Event Viewer and saw the Save dump log. It says the computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. Then it says the bugcheck was (bunch of Hex numbers) and it was saved in a directory. I shut off the automatically restart option. I'll wait and see if the computer still restarts by itself. Thanx for the help both of you.

That bunch of hex numbers is the Stop Error I think. If I remember it starts with the words "bugcheck was" then a series of eight digit numbers. The first number is the Stop Error and the next numbers are the parameters.

Everything seems to be going fine as of now. Thanx guys for your help.
