Windows XP Pro Help files....

Getting broken link images in my Windows help files.
Also getting line 114 error with my excel VB help files.
WHat can I do ?

Internet Explorer cumulative patches may cause window.showHelp to cease to function if you have not applied the HTML Help update. If you have installed the updated HTML Help control from Knowledge Base article 811630, you will still be able to use HTML Help functionality after applying these patches.

tried the patch did not help.
tried this patch from the downloads "WindowsXP-KB824146-x86-ENU.exe" and it fixed the line 114 error.
However still have the broken links for pictures in the windows help form the start menu !

The broken links would normally suggest that the pictures have been deleted from your system. However the helpfiles that windows uses incorperates the pictures in the chm files.

Let us know an example of a missing file, i.e. what you searched for and what search option you tried to view.

It might just be a case of you needing to download the helpfiles again.

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Windows.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

The example that you gave shows a nice Windows Logo!! If you have the windows CD there then you can extract the help files from your cd.

Click on Start > Run > Type MSconfig.

On the general Tab there is a button named Expand File.

You can use this to replace corrupt files.

One final note are you having problems viewing pictures in internet explorer?

Can you see this picture?

If not there is a specific fix for that.

Yes I can see the picture in my browser..
I tried repairing windows yesterday...no help.
If I try to run MSconfig...which files should I look for ?

The fact that the repair installation failed to fix the problem may indicate corruption in your registry.

Have you tried a Registry Cleaner program?

Before you use a Registry Cleaner, see if you can manually open any of the Help and .chm files in C/Windows/Help by clicking on them manually.

If they open correctly then a Registry Cleaner may help.

Also if you have done a repair installation all your Windows updates will have been lost (including SP1 if that was not included on your XP CD).

Your problem may be solved if you revisit Windows Update Site and fully update your installation.
