I am upgrading a system to Windows XP Pro. The install goes fine to 32%. Then it says Installing Network. The percentage gauge comes up. 3 hours later it is still at 32%. Five hours later, 10 hours later the same. The advertising messages are changing constantly and activity indicators are working, the percentage progress is not. I have tried rebooting but the setup resumes and hangs again. I cannot end the setup. Any suggestions?

Try disabling any networking devices in the BIOS.

If that doesn't work you could try setting the BIOS to the safe defaults.

Also if you have any Network Cards that are not part of the motherboard try removing/disabling them until the installation is complete.

Also restart the installation from scratch incase it is simply corrupted.

Thanks Mr. Greg, I will certainly do that, but I am at a loss when you say to restart the installation. If I reboot the installation automatically resumes. ESC doesn't cancel it and I have found no way to stop it so that I can restart the install. Any ideas?

When the machine starts it should say something like "Press any key to boot from CD"

If not then it is likely that the boot order in your BIOS is set to boot from the Hard Drive first. What you will need to do is make sure that your CD/DVD Rom drive is set as the first or primary drive.

Only problem is I was doing an upgrade hoping not to lose my apps as some of them I no longer have the install for. I initiated the upgrade from my Windows ME desktop. I am afraid that if I initiate the CD install at boot that I will erase everything. Your thoughts?

Hmmm. Well you would not loose anything unless you formatted the hard drive, but you are correct that many of the software that you use would not work.

Therefore try just disabling/removing the Networking devices on the machine and see if that helps you.

Also the advice on this page may help you - Specifically check out the section "Your computer stops responding and a black screen appears during the upgrade"

You are right. Restarting the install worked just fine. Some apps I did not get to start but my docs and saved files are still there. Thank you.
