hello, i have a windows 2000 domain server setup as PDC with AD. i have a windows xp pro computer connected to the domain. i also have a windows 98se computer connected to the domain. i have an HP4 laser printer installed on the xp pro machine. i have it shared on the network. other xp pro computers can connect and print to it fine. i need to be able to print to it from windows 98 se. when i browse the network from the 98se a box pops up for username and password. i have added the windows 98se domain user information to the power users group of the xp pro machine. but i still can not connect. help appreciated.

You need to capture the print port on the 98se computer
Right click on the printer and click capture print port tell it to be whatever you want and tell it to reconnect and your sorted

Can you see the printer share in Network Neighborhood?

If you are asking the XP machine to host the local share, rather than install local printer -- rather thnn redirect to a seperate network share:

Under Win9x it is possible, even likely, that there are two logons: a local machine logon, and a Domain logon.

Add the local logon username and password as the user on the XP machine that hosts the printer.

i can't capture the printer port cause i can't see the printer. the printer has to be install locally on this xp pro machine. other people also need to print to this printer. i setup the share in windows xp. other xp computers can connect and print fine. windows 98 computers cannot connect to it. there are no local windows 98 user/pass. the 98 computers are setup with client for microsoft networks configured to login to the domain. the domain user/pass has been added to the xp pro machine.

You have to redo this.

. create a local printer install on the XP Host
. add a network printer defintion (shared) on the Domain DC

-or-

. create a local printer install on the XP Host
. create a network share
. add the local logon username and password as local users to the XP Host

Note: in the first case, be sure to add the Group "Authenticated Users" to the permissions on the printer share.
It is not there by default.

AHHHHH right had to do this the other day for parallel port networking between XP and 98se could be relevant to your problem
Under incomming connection properies i had to 'allow directly connected peripherals to connect without password' even if they did have the correct password.
But seeing as this is printers im not sure.
Right i just set up a share of my HP 815C over my network.
1) Pluged in the USB to the back of the pc and into the printer
2) Plugged printer in, windows identifys it
3) Right click on the printer and click sharing, share as network printer
4) Go onto 98 PC click on the pcs shared docs
5) Click on printer and select capture printer port

Sorrry but i dont use domain i use workgroup so this may not be of a huge amount of help

this is not a DOS printing issue. i'll try installing the printer on the server and sharing it from there and see what happens... i was trying to avoid the additional traffic... but no big deal i guess.
