i loaded windows xp on my hp pavilion 4458 and it started up fine for about a day. then, xp would stop loading right before the Welcome Screen appeared. totally black screen. the monitor light is still green. i changed physical locations and the only difference was a different mouse, keyboard, and monitor. i could, however, boot into safe mode and get all the way past the Welcome Screen and login.

Connect it back up with the original monitor and lower your resolution. Then put it back on the "new" monitor. Safe mode operates on 640x480 resolution and that's OK. Is your "new" monitor capable of 800x600? (normal resolution of XP.

I'll try that...is there anyway I can do this during safe mode or while I'm still on the "new" monitor, or do I have to connect a different monitor to set the resolution to 800x600?

Go into safemode while on your new monitor. start...right click my computer....manage....device manager...display adapter...unistall...reboot. It should now reinstall the display to match your monitor.

I've had problems with a PS/2 mouse - TV tuner card conflict which prevented XP from booting up fully,so the problem could also be caused by the mouse or the keyboard as well.
