Hi Guys,

I have got windows XP Professional, about 3-4 months ago I reinstalled windows XP as I ran out of disk space. It has been working fine but recently it started palying up. It keeps restarting itself. Sometime when I switch on before it gets to login screen it will re-start itself, sometines I click on my username and it will re-start and sometimes I am loggoed on and click on internet explorer and it will re-start.

I have AVG virus checker free version most up to date nd don't have any spyware detectors installed.

Can you please advise what is the problem as you can imagine how frustrating it can be.

Your help would be much appreciated.

Check your RAM...pull one chip out and see if it still happens...if it does, swap chips until you locate one that's potentially bad.

How does it run from Safe Mode?

To get further information about any error look in your Event viewer.

Look in the System or Application folder. You can get to the Event Viewer via right click My Computer icon and select Manage.

Any errors logged in the Event Viewer can be expanded by double clicking on the error line.

Take any event error I.D. number and search for it on these sites.

Also check any "Information" line that mentions "savedump" and you should find reference to "recovered from a bug check". This is the Stop Error that caused your problem.

You can also turn off "automatically restart after an error" so it will just halt at the fault and display the full Stop Error and blue screen.

Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties .
On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery .
Click to clear the Automatically restart check box under System failure , and then click OK . The error message on a blue screen should remain on the screen so you can record the error information.

SP2's have the ability to Disable Auto Restarts from the Safe Mode Options screen.

Hi Guys, Apologies for getting back to you very late as I was out of the country. I ran defrag last night before going to bed and when I checked this morning the follwng message was on screen:

STOP: C000021a {Fatal System Error}
The Windows subsystem system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0:C0000096 (0X006CF4C9 0X006CF1e8).

The System has been shutdown.

Another eroor comes up from time to time:
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Can anyone advise, how I can fix this? I have tried this website " but didn't get anywhere.

Looking forward for your reply.

So, you were able to boot into safe mode?

If so, it sounds like it may be a driver problem or some sort of malware/virus. AVG is not a foolproof protection against malware and viruses.

You could try a free online scan if you can boot into safe mode with networking.

Here is one I use often:
