I have a Dell 5000e laptop 5+ years old that was upgraded to XP from Windows 98. It has worked great until about 2 weeks ago, when it started freezing up, usually while sitting at the Desktop screen. The only way to recover is turn it off and restart. I have run chkdsk /f and sfc scannow with no errors. It does it on battery power and A/C. No error messages occur. Any suggestions?

Hi,
Anything relevant in the Event Log?

Well, about 2 weeks ago would put you at Microsoft's most recent updates...

No changes then? (hardware or software)

Up to date realtime anti-virus and anti-spyware protection?

Anything in event log? (run eventvwr.msc)

Can you monitor the cpu temperature? (it may be getting too hot).

Could be a failing bit of hardware - eg, processor/motherboard - see heat question, memory.

Try running drive manufacturer's diagnostic - usually available on their site.
