Hi,

I have XP Home version on my laptop. I wanted to upgrade it to XP Professional. For it, I used the XP Pro CD and starts installation. I got an error message - hal.dll was corrupted. After replacing it also, it did not work. My system is not booting up till the Windows XP login screen. I had to install XP Pro from command prompt. In this process, I had to replace XP Home version with XP Pro. After the setup, it gave the following error message:
'setup cannot set the required windows xp configuration information. please contact your administrator'

Now my system is totally screwed me. Any help to fix this problem, is greatly appreciated. I hope I can fix this without loosing any data on my harddrive.

Please Help Me.

What recovery options do you have to retreat back to XP Home and perhaps start again? Do you have a XP Home Retail or OEM Recovery CD, or are you one of those with a Hidden Recovery Partition?

See if these give you a few ideas in the mean time?

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
