Hi

I have a Hp laptop. when I logged in I got a message saying

"Windows cannot load the locally stored profile. Possible causes of this error include insufficient security rights or a corrupt local profile. If this problem persists, contact your network administrator.

DETAIL - Error performing inpage operation".

I don't have the XP home edition CD for HP laptop with me but I have Dell's Windows XP home edition. Can I use that for this HP laptop?

Can some one please suggest me what to do and How to do?

It will be helpful to get a step by step details to solve this problem.

Thank you very much in advance.

are there any other user profiles on this computer, such as administrator? you can log in to the other profile, run chkdsk to repair any hard disk and filesystem errors, and have it also check for bad sectors. after chkdsk runs you can check the event viewer for results of the disk check.

If there are significant errors on the hard drive, you need to fix that before reinstalling windows. you can run the drive diagnostic utility available form the manufacturer if bad errors did exist, then run chkdsk again. if this does not fix them, you will need to back up your data and buy a new hard drive.

if the disk errors were minor, you may be able to reboot and log in as the original user. if not, you can log in as another user to move data off of the drive and then reformat and reinstall windows. if you dont have any other user profiles available, you can put the drive in another computer as a secondary drive to back up your data. then reinstall.

lastly, if the other user id is available, and disk errors were minor, you can just create a new user id with administrator rights, continue to use windows without reinstalling, and take ownership of the files from the old user profile so you can use them in the new profile.

also, sorry - the dell install cd will not install on an hp computer, and would violate licensing. you will need to get another install cd.

also, just noticed you were referencing about a laptop, so the suggestion about removing the hard drive and put into another pc to get to the data may not be possible for you without taking the laptop apart. sorry.

Restart the computer in the last known goo configuration. By pressing F8 before the windows screen comes up.

You cannot use other install CD's on different Laptops as they are for specific machines and include different drivers etc. Licensing legalities are a consideration too.

Perhaps you should check the RAM for errors.

The hard drive manufacturer will have free diagnostic software to check the drive.
