I have a strange problem I cannot resolve, can anyone help please.

I run XP home edition and have sp 1a and IE 6 sp 1, after patching the machine with HP drivers and Microsoft patchs, and upgrading Nortons, certain functions stopped working as follows:

MSN won't let me into my inbox unless via the hotmail site in IE.
Search has no effect and no error messages it just disappears.
Some links on some sites (possibly java or security related) won't let me in and some report "no such interface supported".

In fact the E-Mail Notification link on this page also reports "no such interface supported".

I have tried using different profiles, I have tried reinstalling IE6 SP1 but it states it cannot download all the files to completely install. I have tried applying Q327667 but it tells me I haven't got IE6 SP1 installed but my browser indicates I have.
I have ran SFC /SCANNOW but it doesn't report anything.

I can only assume I have some missing registry entries but cannot trace them if this is the case.

Has anyone seen this problem before and can anyone advise. I prefer not rebuild my machine as I no longer have the source media for my software applications.

Thanks

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP (Q318378)

You can reinstall IE in Windows XP by clicking Start, Run and entering the following command:

rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 c:\windows\inf\ie.inf

(where c: is your Windows drive).

You will need to have your XP CD available. If you re-install remember to update it.

Using SFC /Scannow at the command prompt will help in repairing IE.

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP (Q315341)

Thank you for your suggestions, unfortunately none of the above fixed the problem but I haven't yet done an in place upgrade. I found an article on DCOMCNFG which describes my problems exactly which indicated that it related to security. I discovered that the interactive account did not have the relevant rights so I added it. Unfortunatley this too did not resolve the problem. I am now looking into the security side before I reinstall.

linney,

I think he found either or both of these:

For various reasons the DCOM registration issue has not been an XP issue (although OLE writers will face some challenges with XP Service Pack 2).

It is a false lead to the problem.

Do the infamous bcastner 78% if the time fix:

Open a new notepad session, to be called IE_fix.cmd, and copy/paste the below:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Msjava.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Browseui.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll

Save the file, then double click IE_fix.cmd and answer the prompts. Ignore any error messages.

Reboot and test again.

If no joy, see if there is not an issue with a version of the DLLs in place:

Thanks everyone for suggestions, unfortunately nothing worked. I had no option but to rebuild the machine, and I had to reformat the disk and start afresh, as installing XP over the top did not resolve it. However in search for a fix, I discovered this appears to be a common problem, specifically with HP machines running XP and Norton's, not sure if there is a link to this configuration though.
