Windows XP and 98 Networking

I have two computers that connect through a router one is XP and the other is 98. The 98 has an IP of 192.168.1.100 and the XP is 192.168.1.101 and I can ping each computer from the other. They are both in the same Workgroup and have file and print sharing enabled. They both use DHCP from the router to obtain IP's and both can access the internet.

However I cannot see either computer from the other when Browsing. I have Norton Personal Firewall on the XP unit but have disabled it to no luck. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Silly questions but,

Is XP Firewall switched off (you wouldn't believe how many people don't realise it's running in shop built PC's)

Do you need to open internal ports on your router?

Yes the XP ICF has been turned off but the two computers still cannot browse to each other.

On both machines "Enable Netbios over TCP/IP", disable LMHOSTS, make Netbios the default protocol (a click in Win9x).

Also,

. Make certain both machines are sharing something: folder, drive, printer, something;
. Make sure you are not using "blank" or empty logons. The logons should be with username and password.
. On the Win9x boxes, the logon type should be "Client for Microsoft Windows"

You can find machines that for whatever reason will still not browse after all of these steps. Install Netbui on both machines. It is not worth fighting about. For some special tips on installing and using Netbui with XP, see Scott Finney's terrific notes:
