According to Microsoft, when install XP you have to activate
it whithin a certain period of time-What happens if I don't?
Will I still be able to update from the Net?Mind you I'm currently using ME and I'm thinking of upgrading.

Howdy:

If you don't activate, XP simply stops working until you do.. No Windows, no Desktop, No NOTHING !!!

Murray,

Do you know how long it is before that happens? I honestly can't remember if I activated my new computer's OS or not.
I believe I did, because that is the way I always work, but I can't be for sure at the moment. I have however installed all of the updates since the purchase 1st of May.

Regards,

Marlon

Good luck, and Happy Computing

I have never activated mine and have had it since it was released & I don't know anyone who has in my IT department....

Thirty days, BUT:

Most new computers use an OEM license version of XP. It is pre-activated; or more accurately, does not require an activation. This is not true of all OEM versions, but generally true for the major computer manufacturers.

Retail licenses of XP, including Upgrade versions, require the product activation.

mine said it needed to be activated - 3 days before the deadline, it forgot.
