When my company buys new computers, they send them to me for setup. I run windows setup, when prompted, I enter the users name, and add an administrator password. The username is not password protected. I then install Novell Client, activate or install any needed applications and send it off to the user. When the user starts the machine, Novell starts as it should, the user enters the proper Novell credentials, and logs in. Before the client connects to the network, a windows workstation password box comes up, pre-populated with the users Novell username. If the user enters the Novell password, log in fails. This box is looking for the username that was entered during setup. This is confusing to many. If someone not familiar with this particular workstation tries to login, not knowing the original username, they get frustrated. How can I disable this windows workstation password box? If the user checks workstation only from the Novell client, the client pre-populates the username of the original user. To add to the confusion, if the computer changes hands, the new user goes into control panel and changes the user name to their own, the windows workstation password box is still looking for that original username, Can this be changed? Sorry for getting long winded, thanks in advance for any and all assistance.

Thanks for the link. I edited the registry as instructed by the TID. The windows login box shows the correct username, but it will still not login. Only when I revert to the username from setup will it login. There must be a registry key overlooked in the TID creating this. Any thoughts? Would a "find and replace" of the original username cure this?

Just curious, for the 3rd registry key from the top in the TID(HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon\DefaultUserName), did you make the value Administrator or the username you created from setup?

I set the value to the desired username. After your post, I went back and tried the original name, and administrator. All yielded the same result-in the client logon box, the key value username was supplied, when the "workstation only" checkbox was selected. Deselecting the box gave the desired NDS username. From "workstation only" the only acceptable logon was the original name. From the NDS logon, it accepts NDS credentials, then the windows workstation box appears. The key value name is populated in the user field, but only the original username (from setup) is accepted to complete the logon process.

Continuing on, I first uninstalled the Novell Client to remove its influence (fast user switching etc.). I then tried to change the profile imagepath key. This created a new folder with the username I wish to remove. There must be a way to eliminate this problem short of reinstalling windows. Any other ideas?

Thanks, Bill
