I have two PC's that are currently running Windows 98 SE and I am considering upgrading them to ME or 2000. Can anyone offer me any thoughts about this subject.

One of the two PC's is a Dell Dimension PIII-600 that is a couple years old, so I don't see a problem here, it could even handle XP.

The other PC is an older Toshiba Infinia PII-233.
When I tested it on PCPitsops XP test site it indicated that it just barely qualified as a candidate for XP. (BIOS is too old, the harddrive is small, 6GB, etc.) The Toshiba is my daughters PC and she doesn't use it enough to justify spending a lot of time or money to upgrade it too much but Win98SE is not real stable on this system (as compared to the DELL).

Thanks.

If 98SE is having stability problems on your 233, switching to an OS with GREATER hardware requirements seems foolish, especially since you said your daughter doesn't use it much.
I'm a big advocate of "ain't broke - don't fix it" mentality. If you need a more netcentic OS like 2000, or a more user friendly OS like ME, then upgrade the 600, but if your current system does what you need it to do then I'd suggest staying with it.

98SE is pretty stable for the most part. So it my be the PC. ME is really quirky and many of installed it, only to uninstall it and go back to w98SE.

Windows 95/98/ME are all Windows 4.x versions and each one is worse than the preceding version. I have a W2k machine, running in VMWare on BSD, up now and it's the best os Microsoft wrote. Of course they then screwed that up with their xp licensing sceme. I'd whack the 98 on the 266 and install 95. Upgrade your machine to 256 megs of RAM and put Windows 2000 on that one.
