Is it possible to download the software listed after visiting the "Windows Update" page and having the machines scanned ? As we want to do it on several servers that cannot be taken down during the day we want to save time by downloading them out of hours and installing them early in the morning.

You could try Microsoft SUS server it's free.

I have not used it personally, but I believe it downloads all the windows update patches/fixes and allows you to in a sense have windows update on your local network.

This would obviously be much faster and more efficient.

I think SUS only provides updates for 2000/XP systems, and is designed to run on either 2000 or Server 2003.

Good call ;)

I do not believe windows update works with NT either. But you can use the MBSA tool to scan those servers (MBSA must be run from Windows 2000 or later machine but can scan NT if it is SP4 or later). That will tell you what patches you are missing and you can download the patches. Then use qchain.exe when you install the patches so it will only require one reboot.
