HI

I have windows XP and recently when I go to the windows update page it just stays on the "Checking for latest version of windows update software" and does not move no matter how long I leave it logged on.

When I also enter the Symantec web site to check for security risks it does not recognise my browser it say "Your browser is not sending out any information" and I have to give it some information.

Now although I am happy that my browser seems secure and is not sending out any info I cannot download any critical updates from Microsoft.

I must have changed a setting somewhere but I cannot think where, I have reset to default all setting in "Internet Option" in IE.

I have Norton Firewall which I have had loaded since I built this system (Aug 03) and it has updated many times prior to this recent problem, no setting have been changed in that even so I set the windows update software to "Permit All".

Any advise would be appreciated.

Researched Google Groups and saw some different fixes, including some for setting the MTU, via the ping test. Says that all MTU's should be between 1400 and 1500, but the highest ping that I can get is 1370.

On another note, this is only happening over my DSL modem, via Verizon.net. If I connect via dial-up, Windows Update works fine, it just takes 3 hours to download all of the updates.

Now I don't have a firewall (*yet*), so I am not sure why my Westall 2200 DSL Modem would cause the problem with Windows Update. Could it be the MTU setting?

I have also heard that you have to set your time clock to windows time.
Double click on the clock, lower right on taskbar, then go to internet time and make sure it is set to: time:windows.com and click on "update now".
Then go to m\soft and try your updates.

You can also get a free cdrom from m\soft with all the updates up to nov 11/03, i got one, they even pay for postage. Sorry, I dont have the link.

For those of you with slow Internet connections, Microsoft has a CD for you!
The Windows Security Update CD will be shipped free of charge and includes Microsoft critical updates released through October 2003. It also includes a free anti-virus and firewall trial software CD.
This CD is only available for Windows XP, Windows Me, Windows 2000, Windows 98, and Windows 98 Second Edition (SE).
Go here to get your copy ordered - it takes 2 to 4 weeks to arrive.
