HI

I have windows XP and recently when I go to the windows update page it just stays on the "Checking for latest version of windows update software" and does not move no matter how long I leave it logged on.

When I also enter the Symantec web site to check for security risks it does not recognise my browser it say "Your browser is not sending out any information" and I have to give it some information.

Now although I am happy that my browser seems secure and is not sending out any info I cannot download any critical updates from Microsoft.

I must have changed a setting somewhere but I cannot think where, I have reset to default all setting in "Internet Option" in IE.

I have Norton Firewall which I have had loaded since I built this system (Aug 03) and it has updated many times prior to this recent problem, no setting have been changed in that even so I set the windows update software to "Permit All".

Any advise would be appreciated.

Tools | Internet Options | Programs | Reset web settings

This might fix your problem their
I would advise turnin on the XP firewall and gulp deactivating norton.
Then seeing what its like on the update site.
I would also try to download the newest version of IE.

Spybot and Adaware for good measure could always be a spybot or something.

Also is your CD KEY legal? no offense meant to you but microsoft have started blocking pirate cd keys to their servers (i think Bcastnet will be able to confirm/disprove this)

Hello!
Try this , works in 99% of theese issues .

Start - Run
type in;
regsvr32 /u %windir%\System32\IUCTL.dll

Delete c:\program files\windowsupdate
Delete c:\wutemp

After this retry windowsupdate.

Took your advise and disabled Norton, I always have both Norton and XP firwalls enabled.

After I disabled Norton all was OK and I was able to look at the updates.

It is strange as I have set all of the settings in Norton to allow IE Update access, there must be something I missed.

Thanks for the heads up.

Well ,did my tip work or not.
It would be nice to know ....

The tip will force a new install of the activex control and the contoling files .

Why do you have Norton AND XP both firewalls enabled? They can interfere with each other. Norton is much better. For a test, go to grc.com and check with the XP fw, and then the Norton fw.

SYAR2003

I did not need your tip, but thanks for the info I willkeep on file and if the need arises will use it and let you know.

micker377

I did not think they conflicted but on your advise will disable XP firewall.

I will also do the tests.

Thanks All

Norton is several 1000 more times capable of stealting your ports with the tests on GRC all ports came out stealthed and several couldnt even be found.
With XP firewall on only some were blocked
That was when i tested it before i brought norton and then tested it again afterwards Norton makes a considerable difference.
Although for home uses i would say the XP firewall can normally keep you alive

micker377

I visited grc.com and my machine passed all tests not one of the 1057 ports were vulnerable all stealthed (green) also it could not get any information from my machine which in the report stated my machine was unusually secure.

So all seems OK with both firewalls activated although I am sure it is Norton that is the one stopping all access.

Thanks

As micker377 has said norton is the one to keep you secure, i would now follow my origional advice and deactivate the XP native firewall, because well its not much good compared to norton and like so many other things 'to many cooks or in this case firewalls spoil the broth'

What do you do if this still doesn't work?

My problem is that the windows update site hangs after I start the scan, and then reports 100% and no updates, eventhough my last update was over a month ago.

I am currently trying SYAR2003 advice, but the same hanging is taking place. At least this time I got to recertify the Security box.

Any suggestions?

830066 - Windows Update reports that new updates are not available, although your computer is not up to date

When you use the link -
- make sure you select the correct version of XP, if my memory serves me, there should be 40+ critical updates, certainly more than 11. Again referring to memory, try the listing for XP at the bottom of the list. I can't check it out at the moment due to my settings.

Thanks for replying.... Following the link that you provided, It tells me to :

RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:
-Start Internet Explorer.
-In the Address box, type and then click Go.
-In the Revocation information about the certificate was not available... do you still want to connect? dialog box, click Yes.
-On the Tools menu, click Windows Update.
-On the Windows Update Web page, click Scan for Updates.

...but when I do go to the getmanifest.asp site, I don't get a popup security box, I get this.

- <catalog>
<provider />
</catalog>

Any ideas?

It is? Could you tell me which link off that page, as I have checked many of them.

Thanks again!

11th from the top, in First Section "Problem Reachin Windows Update"

"Scan reaches 100%, No updates available..."

TDLA, from my notes, the source I have written down is the remarkable Kelly Theriot:

"When you use the Windows Update scan feature, the scan quickly reaches 100%, and then displays the "There are no updates available at this time" message. To correct this:

Verify that your computer's date and time are accurate and that the Internet Explorer language option is not empty.

To check the language setting in Internet Explorer:

1. Click "Tools" and then choose "Internet Options"
2. Click the "Languages" button
3. Make sure at least one language is listed in the "Language Options" dialog.

If the above hasn't helped: Go to Internet Explorer/Tools/Internet Options/Connections/Lan Settings and uncheck: Automatically detect settings. "

Hope this helps.

Thanks for replying Bill.... but I have seen that Language trick and Lan Setting trick elsewhere, neither have helped.

I even tried changing my default language to Russian. That didn't help either. Still jumped from 0% to 100% (that was the only thing that I could understand on the page, :) )

Here is my latest attempt...

I was wondering if I should try setting up a proxy, any other suggestions?
