Hi

After failing to rectify problems with Windows properties dialog box that I posted about earlier on this forum I did a repair installation of Windows XP.

Happily this fixed my old problems and everything is running fine.

There is only one new problem.

Windows will not install the updates.
Automatic updates starts when I launch Windows and says the updates are being downloaded. Then is says updates are ready for your computer.

When I click on it and tell it to install the updates a few seconds pass and a window opens that says these updates not installed.

It shows a list of 82 not installed updates (this is all of them) none were installed.

Sometimes when I shut the computer down I get the updates are being installed message and it says “Installing number 1 of so many” and a second later my computer shuts down with nothing done.

I just installed AVG anti virus, and Zone Alarm in place of my old McAfee software.
I thought that these might be blocking the operation so I disabled both and tried again.
Still no updated installed.

I went to the Microsoft Updates web page and tried to install them from there, and at the end it says that a problem with your computer is causing the update to not install.

I looked through the Microsoft database and I couldn’t find anything that addressed this problem. It doesn’t give me any clue about what the problem is or how to find out.

Anyone have any ideas?

Hi again

I don't know what this means but I went to the Windows update page and had it scan for updates for my computer.

When I started looking at then individually every one of them showed a download size of "0 bytes" is this normal?

I think in the past it has always shown the file size.
If it isn’t downloading anything I guess this could be a problem.

Also, contact your PC's mfr & Microsoft. They can be very helpful. If you don't get results, call them back several times, get their name & badge number & incident number (trouble ticket number) and escalate the problem as needed to a Level 2 or Level 3 supervisor.

Hi

Thanks for the help.

Solution number 1 worked.
I followed the instructions to register the Wups2.dll file and all 82 updates and Internet Explorer 7 are all installed.

I never would have found this on me own.
I don't know why but I entered search terms like Automatic Updates Fail, and Updates will not install in the Microsoft data base search and never came across this article.

In fact I never seem to find the information I need until I come to this forum.

Thanks again…

Mike
