My computer takes what seems like a really long time to start up - nearly five minutes. It takes about 2 minutes to get me to the login screen, then once I log in another 2 minutes for my desktop and shortcuts appear and then another one minute until I can choose to start a program.

What should I check for to speed up the startup process?

First off this is usually caused by several programs starting up at one time. Go to start, run, then type msconfig. Now click the startup tab. Look up these items and uncheck the ones you dont want starting up.

Also might be a good time to run chkdsk and defrag.

To run chkdsk, right click on c: drive left click on properties. Now click the tools tab, next click check now and then check both boxes, click start and it will say cant perform now would you like to on restart, tell it yes. Then restart the computer and it will begin.

When you load go to start, run, acessories, system tools and click on defragmenter. now click defragment and it will begin.

Let us know if this helps.

Another thing to look out for is having too much stuff on your desktop. As your desktop is the first thing that comes up onto the screen after boot, I think it loads all your desktop stuff into some sort off virtual memory ( no doubt I will be corrected if im wrong ). And you may want to try adaware, its free ware used for finding all those nasty spy ware tools, I run mine once a month and it always picks up stuff. Also run a virus scan, viruses can considerably slow your system down. And finally make sure your hard disk isnt full, drives operating with less than 15% space remaining tend to slow down as they sift through all that info.

If you dont ask you wont get :)
