WHEN I BOOT MY COMPUTER IT GOES THROUGH INITIAL STARTUP AND WHEN IT GOES TO THE SCANDISK, IT STOPS LOADING. SO MY COMPUTER HANGS RIGHT ON THE SCANDISK SCREEN (BLUE SCREEN). AND NOW I CANNOT GET IT TO GO ANY FURTHER. CAN ANYONE HELP ME GET WINDOWS TO BOOT. IT WAS WORKING FINE THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE COMPUTER FROZE, I HAD TO cntrl alt del TO REBOOT, AND IT HASN'T WORKED SINCE. ALSO I TRIED TO START THE COMPUTER IN SAFE MODE, BY PUSHING DOWN THE cntrl BUTTON ON STARTUP, AND IT DOESN'T WORK, IT SAYS THERE IS A KEYBOARDING ERROR. SO I AM REALLY LOST ON WHAT TO DO HERE. IF ANYONE CAN HELP I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE IT.

THANKS
ZYGO

Hi Zygo,
I suggest you go the "Safe Mode" route to sort out the problem. Whilst the PC is booting, wait for the 'Starting Windows 95' message, and immediately you see it press the F8 key. This should give you a boot menu and from there you can choose Safe Mode.
Alternatively, you can press F5 which will bypass the startup files and leave you at a command prompt (C:\), and from there you can manually start Windows (Win).
Once you are successfully in Windows, immediately shutdown and reboot. That may be all that is necessary (are you feeling lucky :))?), but if not get into Windows again, and run a manual scandisk, then shutdown and reboot.
In my experience, that is all that will be necessary - otherwise yuo may have a hardware fault (dodgy HDD etc...).

Good Luck....

ZYGO,

Have you tried to hit F8 when the computer first mentions that Windows is starting up? This should give you the menu to be able to select Normal, or Safe Mode if you want it (though I would try normal first). Then run, Scandisk inside Windows to fix any errors.

The keyboard error is coming up because you are holding down the key too soon. Wait a few seconds till after the BIOS loads (generally looks like white text on a black background) then instead of holding down ctrl, try F8 like the other two posts said.

I tried what you all said, this is what happens.
When I hit f8 it looks like this
MICROSOFT WINDOWS 98 STARTUP MENU
1)Start Windows 98 Setup from CD ROM
2) Start Computer with CD ROM Support
3) Start Computer without CD ROM Support
ENTER CHOICE:_

below at the bottom of the screen it does say Safe Mode PF5 but when I do that it goes to a black screen that says
A:\>
I then tried to type WIN and it says that it is wrong or something like that. I also tried typing C: and then typing WIN and that didn't work either. Please Help
