I have a windows 2000 server machine with AD and exchange 2000
installed. Everything is working fine except name resolution. I can
ping an IP address and return a name from that. However, I cannot ping
a name and return an IP address. I'm confused as to where the problem
is. I thought it was in the reverse dns lookup zone but I have had no
luck with that. I've recreated both zones several times per
microsoft's instructions. When I ping a device by name it sends all
echo requests to Whatever is the name of the
domain and a corresponding exists. Where are the
settings for this and what should they be? This is a native 2k domain
and I am using DHCP. I thought I set up inside dns requests to be handeled inside, but obviously that is not the case. All name requests can't be resolved or they are routed outside:

DNS SETTINGS:
forward lookup zone records-
[1]State of authority
[2]Name Service
[3]Host

Reverse lookup zone records-
[1]State of authority
[2]Name Service

DHCP SETTINGS:
Scope set up
SERVER OPTIONS
006 DNS SERVERS Standard insideIP

Any help would be appreciated.

Are the DNS settings on the clients pointing towards the server? Is the server pointing to itself and forwarding to a internet dns server?

The server is pointing to itself as host and forwarding to external DNS servers. All of the clients are pointing to the 2k server.

I may have spoke too soon. Something is awry, trying to do a nslookup reveals:

Microsoft Windows 2000 [Version 5.00.2195]
(C) Copyright 1985-2000 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\admin1>nslookup
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
*** Can't find server name for address 10.40.10.1: Timed out
*** Default servers are not available
Default Server: UnKnown
Address: 10.40.10.1

The TCP/IP nic settings for the server point to itself for DNS. In DNS I have a forwarding zone A-record of HOST pointing to itself. I do not have a pointer record in reverse. When I try to set up a pointer record it wants an address of 10.40.0.X but my server is 10.40.10.1. Do I even need a reverse transfer zone. This is the only sever in this domain. In the properties of DNS I have use forwarders set up with the External DNS servers. In the DHCP settings: Scope options has a router pointing to the router and a DNS server pointing to itself. Server options has a DNS server pointing to itself.
