When I booted my W98 system this morning the following message appeared "while initializing device vkd: Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer". Restarting the computer gives the same message but truncated

Can anybody give me a reason for this error and a solution?

Many thanks

Go back to a good copy of the registry .

Toggle F8 ( when , verifying DMI pool message comes on ) or Press
Ctrl during bootup , depends on your computer .

Select , Safe mode Command prompt

After the C prompt , type , scanreg /restore

Follow the prompts and select a registry dated prior to the problems .

This article describes how to restore a backup copy of the Windows 98
or Windows Millennium Edition (Me) registry
scanreg /restore

Restore Operation Failed (Q220878)
The information in this article applies to:
Microsoft Windows 98
Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition

With the PC off, disconnect and reconnect the keyboard.

If this doesn't work, try another keyboard.

These folks have you on the right track, but check thread615-284960 for a different possible solution.

Good luck, and keep us updated! Mudskipper

To Jmatt, Wheedoggy & Mudskipper:

Many thanks to all of you for your replies - this is what I then tried

Replugging and then replacing the keyboard had no effect. I was even unable to reinstall Windows - oh so strange!!

I performed a Scandisc surface scan and this found a bad block and a mis-reporting of available disc space - the latter was fix automatically. So at last I could reboot the system sucessfully

I reinstalled the latest version of Norton Anti Virus - not only did this fail to install correctly but refused to perform a virus scan - I then ran a scan from another system on my Network and 35 viruses called W95.Spaces.1445 virus were found (this virus attacks EXE files)

I downloaded the Emergency SAV (Sophos Anti Virus) for DOS from another system, copied it to my system over my network, restarted my system in DOS and ran the SAV - it correctly disinfected all the viruses

I then rebooted my system in W98. I deleted all previous versions of NAV (Norton AV), reinstalled current version, downloaded all available AV definitions and performed a full scan - no viruses found. I then ran a full scan on all systems on my network - no viruses found

My total down time has been 1.5 days and quite exhausting

Lesson to be learnt: unknown because the version of NAV installed on my and the other networked systems was always up to date but even so it still failed to detect the w95.spaces.1445 virus which was first released in 1999

Thank you, gentlemen, for your support and help - most valuable

Geeze, what an ordeal!

It certainly reaffirms belief in some negative reports I have read on NAV.

Glad you got through it!

Rgds

Wow! I'm impressed! Glad that you are up and working--thank you for the update!

As for the bad block, fair warning--that is something that you will want to watch. I've seen hard drives that ran for years with bad blocks, and others that went down hill REAL QUICK. If you want advice on what to do about this, do a search on this site--you'll find plenty of suggestions! IMHO, the drive is highly suspect (let the flames begin ;-) ).

Anyway, thanks again for posting back--always nice to hear what the outcome is! Mudskipper
