As I am finding, many vendors have stopped writting or supporting software that would run on Win NT 4.0. For example; Norton AntiVirus will not run on NT workstation as a single user license. MacAfee has its problems as well, can not load new version Roxio for external CD-RW. Other software; Canvas, Corel Suite, Filemaker Pro, Pagemaker, AutoCad, Access, Visio, Project
Therefore, I am being forced to go to 2000 professional. What should I look out for? My system is a Dell precision workstation with Xeon processor, SCSI drives, SCSI Scanjet, SCSI CD-RW, Zip drives, Palm.

TIA

Hi

Your machine should have no problems running Windows 2000 professional, provided it meets the minimum requirements. Getting drivers for anything not supplied in the box shouldn't be a problem, but I would look at the vendor websites first to see if they support operation under 2K and to download the drivers.

Basically, at a former employer, the minimum spec we allowed for Win2K was 300MHz processor with 128Mb RAM, although it runs far better with more.

However, 2000 professional has been superseded by XP Professional, so you may want to consider that as well. The minimum usable system I have found for XP is 500MHz P3 processor with 256Mb RAM, although again it really benefits from 512Mb.

Hope that this is useful.

download the windows 2000 readness analyser from microsofts website or if you have a win2k cd run \i386\winnt32.exe /checkupgradeonly
