To complete many tasks, like deleting, loading etc. Vista pops up a message box saying "Windows needs my permission to continue".

For loading software this is clearly useful, but to delete a desktop icon it is a pain.

Does anyone know how to stop or modify this feature?

I am running Vista in a Virtual Machine, with the Office 2007 Beta. (Not that this affects the problem above)

This is probably the most common complaint about Vista in general. Earlier betas even required additional permission to change the desktop background. I don't have the current beta installed to test anymore, but I thought the logic was that if the icon/shortcut is on the 'all users' desktop, this would happen to prevent you from potentially deleting shortcuts that other users might need and if the shortcut was only in your user account desktop, then this would not happen. You might also want to post which version you're using.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I have run a quick test and it does only happen on the "all users" desktop, when deleting icons.

It has just decided to block MSN Messenger, when I said unblock, it needed to ask my permission. Generally it's a pain, and if I was using it everyday, I think I would soon get fed up with it.

The version is Beta 2, build 5384. Windows Vista "Ultimate"
(That's Microsoft's word not mine)

No, Shift+Delete makes no difference.

"Am i sure I want to permanently delete this item?"
Yes
"You need to provide administrator credentials to delete this file"
Continue - despite the fact I am the administrator
"A program needs your permission to continue"
Continue

4 key strokes / mouse clicks to delete a file, and then it still goes to the Recycle Bin, so I have to click a few more times to empty that.

Not exactly an aid to productivity!

Yes, there are still many security vs. convenience tradeoffs to be hashed out.

Whilst creating another user, I came across the option to turn off the "Windows needs your permission" feature.

For info it is in Control Panel > User accounts > Change Security Settings and is called User Account Control (UAC).

Once this is turned off, shift+delete works properly, deleting items without putting them in the recycle bin.

Steve

When you turn off UAC does that action cause the Security Center to start complaining or do you have to make adjustments there too?

I had to tell the Security Centre not to alert me.
I still get the red shield with the white cross in my system tray.
