I'm in the process of coming up with a migration plan to upgrade from windows 2000 to 2003. I need some advice on one of my DC that houses the FSMO roles. I may need to reformat this DC before upgrading to 2003 because the person before me only left me with a 4gb primary partition. I only have about 1 gb left. So, my question is do I need to transfer these role to another DC and tranfer them back when the server is reformatted?

Thanks

Yes, transfering fsmo roles before taking down the server is nessasary. I believe if you have a second DC already on the network and you dcpromo down the server you are wanting to reformat, during the process, it will transfer the fsmo roles for you to the other dc. You can also do it manually. Here is link

Hope this helps

Justin

To be safe, transfer all the roles manually, then run DCdiag.exe on the server the roles are transferred too, to verify all the roles transferred gracefully, than dc promo the old server.
