I've done this before in the past, but only once and I don't remember how I did it.

How do you turn off Windows Messenger in Win XP? Last time I did it I went to a web site that told me where to navigate in Win XP to turn it off.

Nevermind, I got it.
Start-Control Panel-Admin Tools-Services-Messenger-Stop the service.
